Staff Development K-12 - University: Lessons From the Trenches

Session Abstract
As new technology emerges, the world of education is changing at lightning speed – or is it? How well our educators are trained may determine the success of our schools.
Target Audience
The target audience for this session will be all educators, administrators, and those interested in best practices for the training of faculty, at both K-12 and university levels, in the implementation of new technology at all levels.
Learning Outcomes
• Identify what works and what to avoid when planning staff development
• Examine the philosophy driving K-12 ands university staff development
• Examine teacher/professor perceptions of how staff development should be structured
• Identify the implications for the professional development of teachers as they infuse technology into pedagogical content knowledge.
Session Description
The session will explore a 3-year research project at a K-12 independent school, one of the first in the U.S. to implement the school-wide use of iPads for every student and teacher. The results of classroom observation, teacher interviews and surveys as well as focus groups will be examined in relation to best practices for staff development. In-depth interviews and observations, and the perceptions of administrators and their resulting decisions will also be presented. The continuum of perceptions from before implementation to the present will be discussed.
As universities gear up to prepare adult educators in the use of new technologies, how are they training their faculty to use electronic portfolios and online learning management systems? How are faculty trained to design Federally compliant and engaging courses in order to compete? How does a small, public university transition from traditional face-to-face courses to presenting courses and programs fully online?
Efforts are made to try to schedule sessions on the day preferred by the Primary Presenter, though this cannot be guaranteed. Please check your preference.
