This session introduces an emerging non-formal online learning approach popular in China in recent years. Use of this innovative online learning method is growing among white-collar Chinese workers and appears to play a role in satisfying the needs of lifelong learners.
Target audiences include adult educators and learners who are interested in non-formal learning context, online learning, and mobile learning.
Audiences of this session will learn:
1. the concept of monetization of knowledge and how knowledge is monetized in China;
3. the similarities and differences between the formal online learning and this non-formal online learning;
4. the characteristics and the learning preferences of users that use this learning method;
5. trend of the future development of this innovative learning method.
A modern educational innovation has become popular in recent years and offers an innovative and convenient form of adult lifelong learning in China. This is known as “monetization of knowledge” (MOK) and refers to selling one’s knowledge as products or service, usually in the form of podcasts, in order to achieve its commercial value. This session will first introduce the concept of MOK, as well as the differences and similarities between MOK and the traditional distance courses. Several examples of MOK course will be introduced and analyzed to assist a better understanding. The advantages of MOK courses and the characteristics of MOK users will be provided. MOK users' learning preference (e.g., preferred subject) will also be noted. Finally, the influence and contribution of the MOK courses in China will be described. The development or/and trend of this learning method to China and to other countries as well as future research will also be indicated.
We would like to present our research as a poster presentation. The presentation will highlight the background and the current trend of Monetization of knowledge, the comparison of formal online course and non-formal MOK courses, the analysis of the specific MOK course examples, future development of MOK course, and possible future research.
