Session Abstract

This session will present a Self- Assessment Plan that can be used by adult education teachers to minimize their Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and maximize their Student Talking Time (STT) in the classroom. Different tools and instruments employed in this project will be shown and demonstrated.

Target Audience

The intended audience includes adult educators in general.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will walk away from this session with a coherent and sound way to reduce their own Teacher Talking Time (TTT) practices and augment their Student Talking Time (STT) application in their adult education classes.

Session Description
How can we as teachers change the habit of talking too much in class?
This session will describe the implementation of a four-step self-assessment plan to help adult education teachers minimize their Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and maximize their Student Talking Time (STT) in the classroom. Different tools and instruments employed will be shown and demonstrated. The four-step plan incorporates the following stages: Raising Awareness, Implementing Change, Verifying Change, and Evaluating Improvement. During the Raising Awareness stage, teachers become cognizant of their high TTT by means of a training video and the use of a TTT/STT Self-Assessment Instrument. During the Implementing Change stage, teachers devise an action plan to improve behaviors conducive to high TTT. During the Verifying Change stage, teachers corroborate if they have been able to put the action plan into practice through peer observation. Finally, during the Evaluating Improvement stage, teachers videotape themselves to confirm if they have been able to achieve the desired objectives.
Format & Technique

I will prepare a brief oral synopsis of the purpose, implementation, outcomes, and implications of the self-assessment plan to say to interested parties as they pause to read my poster. I will focus on the big picture so that my audience can understand the significance of the project.
