CDLT PreConference Symposium: Current issues in Distance Learning or Technology for Adult Learners

Presentation Format Requested

CDLT PreConference Only: Concurrent (20 to 45 minutes)

Session Abstract

This session provides an integrated framework that will enable adult educators to adopt a new design mindset for crafting online learning experiences that result in increased learner engagement and deeper learning. Examples on how to apply this framework in the design of new or existing online courses will be provided.

Target Audience

Adult educators, designers, instructors, support services personnel

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• Contrast conventional design practices with learning experience design
• Describe an integrated framework for incorporating learning experience design into the online course development process
• Discuss the application of the framework in crafting new online courses or enhancing existing courses

Session Description

The design of well-crafted learning experiences that actively engage learners and promote deep learning is an appealing goal for today’s online instructors and designers. Traditional design approaches tend to focus heavily on providing content through fragmented lessons and assignments and often fail to result in innovative, learner-centered, and engaging online learning experiences.

This session provides an integrated framework that instructors and designers can use to enhance the online learner experience at the course, lesson, and learning activity levels. It involves a more holistic and empathic approach to understanding learners and how they interact with various aspects of the online environment to attain learning goals. The framework draws upon learning science research viewing both learners and course design in terms of an integration of cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social dimensions to create more holistic learning experiences. In this session, you will learn how the integration of the four dimensions guide the design of various aspects of the online learning environment including the course interface, content presentations, learning activities, social interactions, and assessment. You will be able to apply the integrated framework to the design of new and existing online courses.

Format & Technique

The session will begin by identifying some of the shortcomings of conventional course design practices and the need for a more holistic approach to learning experience design. The presenters will then introduce the integrated framework for designing online learning experiences. Examples of how to apply the framework to designing various aspects of the online course environment will be provided and discussed with participants. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences with designing online courses and how they may apply the integrated framework in their own practices.
