Session Abstract

Online courses are becoming increasingly popular in higher education. While they offer additional options to students, they can also present challenges in terms of student-teacher engagement. This session explores how instructors can engage students more fully and provide them with formative, cogent and timely feedback to enhance their learning experience.

Target Audience

Instructors, administrators, adult students

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to discuss how to provide cogent and formative feedback in the online environment.
Participants will be aware of ways to efficiently grade online assignments.
Participants will discuss techniques to increase student-teacher engagement in the online classroom.

Session Description

It can be challenging to provide helpful feedback to online students in a timely manner. Often classes are large with many discussion threads and other assignments to read, monitor and grade with a short turnaround time. While it may be easy to tell them "good job" or "well done" (and students may even like hearing that), such canned and often ambiguous language may not enhance the students' online experience or lead to positive learning outcomes. This interactive session will explore techniques to keep the students engaged and discuss how to provide them with cogent, formative feedback while meeting important deadlines.

Format & Technique

My first preference is an interactive roundtable discussion.
