Session Abstract

Are you considering pursuing an online doctoral studies or just beginning an online doctoral program? Consequently, online doctoral studies can be a lonely journey, as students struggle with stress, isolation, and depression. Presenters will share study participants’ experiences in an online doctoral program and the success strategies learned.

Target Audience

The doctoral degree is seen as the apex of degree attainment. The targeted audience for this presentation are both domestic and international doctoral students and anyone nursing the dream to pursue online or hybrid doctoral education in the future.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees will have prior knowledge on what to expect before embarking on an online doctoral journey. Also, attendees will learn strategies that will help them succeed in an online doctoral program. The presentation will focus on strategies both international and domestic students ascribe to success in an online doctoral program. Presenters will also offer their experiences and success strategies that they ascribed to success in their doctoral studies. Then, audience members will be allowed to share and ask questions.

Session Description

The current trend in higher education showcase the gradual shift from brick and mortar system to either hybrid or full online programs. Online learning has been praised as an approach to address some of the challenges higher education institutions encounter and acclaimed as a strategy for staying competitive (The Center for Educational Innovation, n.d). Blended and online doctoral degrees are being offered because of an increment of professionals seeking after terminal degrees (Kung and Logan 2014). The rapid surge of online learning is another factor that impacts doctoral education and attrition. Online education offers the benefits of expanding "flexibility, asynchronous instruction, bridging geographical barriers, and time for reflection" (Ames, Berman, & Casteel, 2018, p. 80). As the number of professionals nurse the dream to pursue terminal degrees online, there is the need to address strategies for future and current students to succeed in online programs. Those who have participated in an online doctoral education are able to offer advice and wisdom from lessons learned during their experiences as doctoral students. Being appropriately armed with information can ease the stress and paint a picture of what to expect in either a hybrid /and in a full online doctoral program.
