Count to Five: New York University’s (En)-Counter with the New COP5 Standard

Abstract
As with many other institutions, NYU provides its patrons with a wide variety of electronic resources. The difficulty has always been one of deriving meaningful usage statistics for these resources given the Counter 4 format.
In this presentation, we will detail how NYU has managed to overcome this lack of consistent and comparable usage data by moving to the new Counter 5 standard.
Using Microsoft SQL Server and the accompanying suite of data integration tools, NYU has built a data mart that automatically fetches and aggregates Counter 5 usage data from nearly 50 different platforms. What makes this possible is the adoption by content providers of a consistent Json formatted data export that is made available via API calls.
We will show how this is all accomplished by using a quite simple program that automatically connects to the SUSHI API of each of our platform vendors and returns and processes the returned usage data into one central data mart.
We will also demonstrate in a separate presentation how by using Tableau as our reporting tool, we are able to provide our Administration with actionable business data that looks at usage patterns across platforms and between print and electronic versions.
