Session Abstract

When an adult decides to learn to read, the task ahead is daunting.  How do you capture their attention and engage adult literacy students in the classroom?    Find out how to create 'Ed-ergy' and synergy and reach them through their hearts and minds.

Target Audience

Classroom educators of adult literacy students and adult literacy students with learning disabiites.  Learn how to engage your students with 'Ed-ergy' and synergy in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Adult learners face fear and the unknown every day. In their minds learning to read is a mystery and beyond their reach. Educators must find ways to engage their students and keep them coming back. Using a white board and markers, Rob Shindler, author of Hot Dogs & Hamburgers, public speaker, and classroom teacher to adult reading students, demonstrates how combining timeless phonics with creativity and passion can create a positive and engaging learning environment that will keep your students coming back again and again.

Session Description

Over 36 million adults in the United States lack basic literacy or English communication skills. These adults face the fear of the unknown on a daily basis, and often never seek help to learn to read or write out of shame or embarrassment. Adult literacy educators must be mindful that once these adults are in the classroom, we must find ways to keep them coming back. As a result, you help broaden their world beyond their expectations. As they learn to read they’ll hold their heads a little bit higher, and walk a little taller.

Format & Technique

The concurrent session will be presented as a demonstration of how to teach adult literacy students and/or adult students with disabilities how to read.  Through the use of a whiteboard and markers, combined with  phonics, creativity and passion, educators will learn how to engage adult learners in the classroom and provide them with tools for lifelong learning.
