Session Abstract

Today's adult students have more information and learning opportunities than ever before, but less of that most precious learning commodity - time.  In this session, you will learn when and how to effectively use Microlearning, a powerful, science-based technique, to bridge knowledge gaps and increase retention for even the busiest adults.

Target Audience

This session is for educators, trainers, and community leaders who want to increase the effectiveness of their instruction, utilize current best-practices, and achieve a higher rate of knowledge retention.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this session, learners will be able to:
• Summarize the benefits and limitations of microlearning
• Identify effective topics and tools for microlearning
• Apply microlearning best-practices to a variety of learning opportunities

Session Description

Today’s adult students are often overwhelmingly busy, and while they may truly want to incorporate more learning into their lives, finding the time to do so may be an impossibility.  Enter microlearning!  Microlearning is a short lesson on one topic; it’s a ‘nugget’ of highly useful information delivered with a specific learning goal in mind.  This science based, learner-centric technique increases knowledge retention, knowledge transfer, and overall engagement.  In addition, microlearning often has immediate results and can be delivered in a variety of formats, making this technique particularly accessible and instantly applicable.

Format & Technique

This session will follow a learn/practice/do format.  I will begin with basic information about microlearning, its scientific basis, and its impact on learners.  Then attendees will be presented with concrete examples of microlearning in action and given time to evaluate why certain methods work and how others could be improved.  For the remainder of the session, attendees will brainstorm and design a useful microlearning session within their field.
