Session Abstract

The purpose of this session will be to discuss ways to improve student motivation and engagement in an online learning environment through the use of immediacy behaviors. Discussion will focus on how instructor immediacy, visual imagery, audio and video recordings, and chronemics (temporal immediacy) helps achieve student effective learning.

Target Audience

Adult educators who work in university, community college, or training programs offering online learning environments.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. understand the value of instructor immediacy and visual imagery in online learning environments.
2. identify the best practices of instructor and student use of audio and video recordings to create immediacy in an online learning environment.
3. recognize the significance of using chronemics (temporal immediacy) to create higher student engagement.

Session Description

The purpose of this session will be to discuss ways to improve student motivation and engagement in an online learning environment through the use of immediacy behaviors. Discussion will focus on how instructor immediacy, visual imagery, audio and video recordings, and chronemics (temporal immediacy) help achieve effective student learning experiences. Much of the focus on delivery platforms in online learning omits the value of instructor immediacy in creating student satisfaction with the online setting.

Instructors in an online learning environment face the challenge created by the physical separation of the learners and the instructors. This separation often leads to student feelings of isolation which can impact their motivation and engagement in the online setting.

Participants in this session will be introduced to various types of temporal immediacy techniques including response latency, message frequency in forums, time and promptness of feedback, time of day of responses, and question format design all of which lead to students’ reports of higher course engagement. Overall, this session will guide instructors in the understanding and development of dyadic communication, interaction and immediacy to improve the student online learning experience.
