Session Abstract

This workshop-style presentation explains and offers personal insights about U.S. Fulbright scholar and student opportunities for adult education, the calls for proposals, and the requirements expected in a Fulbright application. It also covers an overview of timelines, compensation, review processes, connections with international partners, and tips for developing competitive applications.

Target Audience

The target audience includes current or future instructors-scholars and doctoral students interested in learning more about the U.S. Fulbright program, the organization, the application and review process, and the experience and benefits of being a Fulbright awardee.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop-style presentation, participants will have learned about the U.S. Fulbright program and organization; been introduced to online resources designed to assist those submitting applications; garnered insights into different types of appointments, components of the application, timelines, and expectations from reviewers; been presented with narratives of experiences from previous adult education Fulbright scholar awardees; and been offered the opportunity to ask questions specific to their interests and needs throughout the presentation.

Session Description

This session can be described as an interactive workshop designed to assist those who have current or future interests in applying to the U.S. Fulbright Commission for grant awards in other countries. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers over 450 teaching, research, or combination of research and teaching awards to U.S. faculty and experienced professionals in over 125 countries. During this tumultuous time of globalization, higher education internationalization, and international student mobility, adult education scholars and doctoral students have much to offer the world. These awards are profound learning opportunities for both the awardee and the host institution and country!

The presenters are three former Fulbright scholars in the field of adult and continuing education. Participants will learn about the U.S. Fulbright program and organization; find online resources designed to assist them in submitting applications; discover insights into different types of appointments, components of the application, and expectations from reviewers; discuss timelines and compensation considerations; and hear narratives of experiences from previous awardees from our field. Importantly, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions specific to their interests and needs throughout the presentation.

Format & Technique

The presentation begins with introductions and overview of the Fulbright opportunities. We’ll discuss available awards, the format of the proposal and review process, and how to identify and partner with an international institution. Further, we will offer practical insights for navigating the official websites and about the elements necessary for the proposal including the project narrative, letters of recommendation, letters of invitation, and the CV. Participants will have opportunities to brainstorm Fulbright ideas and raise questions in an interactive format. Finally, we will discuss our experiences in preparation for and of conducting a Fulbright project abroad.
