Session Abstract

Session discusses using infographics as a learning vehicle for students to demonstrate acquired knowledge of one or more course objectives.  Students learn to design and create an infographic, communicating desired course knowledge, with use of free online resources. Concept is used in multiple classes comprised of traditional/non-traditional college students.

Target Audience

Target audience for this session includes educators who wants an effective way to reiterate a course objective with the use of technology.  Using infographics applies to any subject matter, thus the target audience is broad.  Target audience includes (but is not limited to) educators both in universities and community colleges, workforce training and vocational schools.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to
• Identify what is an infographic
• Demonstrate an understanding of how infographics are used in classroom activities
• Identify how infographics help enforce student demonstration of acquired knowledge and enable critical
thinking
• Gain understanding of how to incorporate infographics into an assignment
• Gain resources to incorporate infographics into an assignment

Session Description

Presenter will originally walk attendees through a hands-on activity.  This infographic activity will empower attendees to identify what is an infographic and how to identify a quality infographic.  After this activity, the presenter will walk the audience through the evolution of the infographic assignments currently being used in her classroom.   How did the assignments come to exist and why was there a need for them?  Samples of the assignments, rubrics and student work will be shared.  Examples will be shown either by digital or print format (depending on the session format).  A free online tool will also be demonstrated as a resource for attendees to use in future infographic activities.  Session will be open discussion with attendees but will end with an open question and answer section. The majority of this session will be dedicated to the infographic assignment section.

Format & Technique

Session will consist of a presentation that includes short videos (if concurrent session), some student examples and a demonstration of a free online infographic tool.  Audience engagement will initially be encouraged at the beginning of the session with a hands on activity used with students to discuss the differences between a good and bad infographic.   Audience engagement will continue to be encouraged throughout the rest of the session by use of open dialogue.
