
Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) at the secondary level are often enrolled in “mainstream” ESL and SEI classrooms. The unique conditions of SLIFE, however, require a rethinking of how to scaffold for their divergent needs. The presenters share instructional strategies to create a rich learning environment.

Nicoleta Filimon currently teaches ESL at the secondary level in an urban district and in graduate ESL teacher training.
Abby Rydbeck currently teachers ESL at the secondary level in an urban district. She is currently completing a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
Douglas Haubert has taught ESL for 30 years as a member of the Peace Corps, at a large urban secondary school and at community college.
