Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching

Ethical and engaged citizens and leaders do not magically appear in Oklahoma’s communities. These individuals learn to think critically by integrating knowledge and competencies to solve complex real-life problems. Educators who expose students to real-life problems or integrate life’s challenges into their curriculum create pathways for students to have transformative experiences. The creation of the Sustainable Housing Project is an artifact that supplies students with the opportunity to transform their relationship with their community and environment.
In the Sustainable Housing Project, a case study scenario tests students to actively learn disciple knowledge through researching the newest developments in eco-friendly housing. By integrating the challenges of the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the Federal Promise Zone of the Choctaw Nation, with a recent tornado, students must create a concept design for submission to the federal government and/or private foundations for rebuilding. Students research building materials for their ability to integrate “net zero” principles of passive solar, water reuse and conservation, and off-grid heating and cooling to demonstrate effective principles of environmental capital.
A physical and financial assets section asks students to research Choctaw Nation housing. Through web-based research, students identify foreclosed homes and calculate the potential for Community Development Block Grant funding. Furthermore, students identify a comparison home and calculate 15 and 30-year mortgage fees to determine the affordable housing threshold for individuals.
Overall, the project exemplifies transformative learning as students develop skills beyond disciplinary knowledge and expand their perspectives of community and environment.
