Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching

Inclusion is a critical component of Transformative Learning. Not only does TL help people become more inclusive, but TL requires an inclusive environment to occur. Creating inclusion in the classroom is no easy task, but online learning adds extra layers of complexity. This session asks the questions: How do we create inclusive, online spaces for students? Is inclusion online different than in person? What are some of the tensions of creating online inclusion? Participants in this session will be able to identify important themes and tensions for creating inclusion in online environments and engage “workshop style” in creating techniques which apply to their own unique contexts. Rather than just offering techniques which may or may not translate to various contexts, the session will present overarching principles of online inclusion based on the presenters’ research. They will then hear examples for how these principles are being applied and engage in discussion around techniques that would translate the principles into the participants’ own unique contexts.
