Session Abstract

The purpose of this project is to examine how participants in a religiously based post-baccalaureate teacher program transfer knowledge to their professional roles as teachers in under-resourced and underserved Catholic schools. This presentation contributes to literature on learning transfer, adult education, and teacher preparation and seeks to provide practicioner recommendations.

Session Description

The specific post-baccalaureate teacher training program studied offers education and religious studies majors the opportunity to teach in under-resourced regional Catholic schools while living in a spiritually grounded learning community. Participants live with other program participants while earning a Master of Education degree. Central to successful teaching is the transfer of learning to professional practice. Of particular interest to workforce development, human resource development, adult education scholars, and program directors of teacher education programs, this research project aims to investigate the ways successful teachers have translated their learning into effective practice. This project also examined the enhancers and hindrances of learning transfer for post-baccalaureate teacher education cohorts. The goal of this research study as well as this presentation is to highlight possible ways to increase the transfer of learning in professional development and higher education. Participants will deepen their understanding of learning transfer so they may enhance it within their own settings resulting in a better return on investment and improvement in student outcomes and teachers’ self-efficacy.
