Session Abstract

The presenters will introduce a research-based and developmentally informed model of reflective
practice for mentoring in the context of leadership development.  The model described helps
individuals and organizations move to a more post-industrial model of leadership, improving the
self-efficacy and agency of those who are disenfranchised or voiceless.

Session Description

In order to move the needle forward in our workplaces, adult educators should create
opportunities to improve mentoring for leadership development. It is vitally important for the
health of our organizations to challenge the status quo, to foster social justice for the
disenfranchised, marginalized, voiceless and the invisible.  With developmentally appropriate
mentoring following a socially informed process of reflection, organizations can build capacity
for a more naturalistic, interdependent and inclusive approach to leadership. This session will
give adult educators and other professionals the steps of the model: event, cognitive and affective
processing, tools, change point, and new event, which represent a systematic structure for
facilitating organic mentoring. The event path model of reflection for leadership development
within the mentoring activity is one such process which can help organizations move to a more
post-industrial model of leadership, improving the self-efficacy and agency of marginalized,
disenfranchised or voiceless.
