Session Abstract

Spring 2021, we identified and interviewed adult basic learners about their perception of mathematics.  First, survey link over social media asked them to identify their mathematical memories. Next, a more in-depth interview was conducted using questions from the survey but pushing for a deeper understanding of their experiences with mathematics.

Session Description

An adult’s life consists of budgets, bill payments, cooking, hobbies, navigation, and work. These are just a few things that utilize math. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the 2013 Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIACC) showed that one in three United States adults scored at level one or below on the five achievement levels of the Numeracy Domain (OECD, 2013). This result means that one-third of the U.S. population of adults cannot accurately calculate the cost of a car rental for a day when given the rental cost plus the cost per mile and the total miles driven. Numbers help many of us make sense of the world, but it can be a nightmare for others. But Why?
