Session Abstract

Have you ever read a poem that made you reflect on life or brought you to tears?  Poems, limericks, and haikus are all an amazing art form that connects to the soul.  Come to this creative and fun roundtable and learn how to incorporate poetry when working with adults.

Session Description

Poetry is an art form that has been utilized throughout the history of the United States to symbolize both happiness and sorrow. Poetry has been used to mark milestones in time such as, the inauguration of President or a reemergence of the cost of war. Poetry has been used as a leisure activity or a method to create an environment for mindfulness.
When teaching adults, instructors commonly incorporate both film, literature, and the latest trend in popular culture as effective teaching tools. Poetry can be included as something new in an instructor’s toolbox to engage the learning of adults.
Adults come into the classroom bringing many of life’s challenges with them. Adult learners are working full-time, raising families, volunteering for school activities, and taking care of aging parents. These challenges can block the learning of adults. Poetry can be a method of unblocking that channel of learning.
In this roundtable, I will discuss aspects of how poetry can be utilized within the classroom through both group discussion and group activities. I will provide literature and resources for instructors to use. I will facilitate a discussion on current best practices of the use of poetry when teaching adults.
