Session Abstract

This case study will explore the learning experiences of six international students who enrolled in Auburn University. The purpose of this study will delve into how these students adapt to learning in an online delivery environment and figure out challenges that they have faced during the pandemic.

Session Description

The COVID-19 pandemic has been spreading in the global community and affecting many aspects of human activities: the suspension of works, the quarantine at home, re-adjustment in all educational institutions' instructional modes over the world, and so forth. Administrators of higher education institutions have to make a dramatic transition from traditional face-to-face learning to distance learning by utilizing internet technology like video conferencing platforms to ensure the continuation of academic activities. The sudden change of instructional modes will bring some challenges.
Berry's acculturation framework refers to acculturation at the group and individual levels. From this perspective, to understand acculturation at the cultural/group level, one must investigate critical features of the 'heritage' culture and the 'host' culture, the nature of their contact relationships, and the changes as a consequence of the contact to both cultures.
This study will interview six international students at Auburn University guided by Berry's acculturation framework. The cases discussed in this study aim to address the gap by exploring international students' adaptation process to online learning. Moreover, this study illustrates their perceptions, challenges, learning behavior, and coping strategies that emerge from the adaption process.
