Session Abstract

What are the implications for learning, access, and equity when professional development is offered virtually? Presenters for this session highlight the importance of effectively shifting modes to provide continuous accessibility for adult learners to high quality trainings. Creative instructional strategies focused on student engagement and meeting learning objectives are emphasized.

Session Description

In this interactive session grounded in transformative learning theory, participants delve into instructional strategies for online professional development that increase engagement and improve learning outcomes. The session is based off an analysis of pre- and post-assessment data, and training evaluations completed by participants for each session attended.
The presenters transitioned multiple professional development training sessions for early childhood educators into an online delivery mode. The sessions are funded by an $1.8 million grant designed to help Arkansas child care providers earn required professional development hours in early childhood education.
Session presenters describe the program in its original format and detail the changes and challenges required to implement the curricula online. They also highlight unanticipated benefits of transitioning to a virtual format. Presenters share best practices learned through the experience. Moreover, participants of the session are afforded opportunities to discuss successful strategies employed in their professional development contexts.
