Session Abstract
Narrative learning through storytelling is breaking technology, learning, and access barriers for adults across the world. Using storytelling through the lens of virtual reality and immersive experiences, professionals, as well as citizens, are not only informing the globe of important issues but restructuring how we learn from them.
Session Description
Living in the most technologically advanced era, adults and students alike have access to unlimited information at their fingertips and are interconnected unlike ever before. Narrative learning and storytelling used to primarily take place within the confines of one’s family and community as well as in the confines of one’s one time and space. Now, immersive experiences and virtual reality can transport individuals to other areas of the world without leaving their homes, and visually transport adult learners into other periods of history. This technology brings both professionals and the average adult new options in storytelling, communicating, and meaning-making for themselves and their audience. These new and unprecedented mediums for adult learning and development are charting new territory for both practitioners and learners. Identifying the tenets and critiques of immersive experiences and virtual reality provides users of these new learning mediums insight into the benefits and responsibilities of embracing life-like storytelling.
