Session Abstract

Do women leaders consider themselves feminists? The literature suggests that some women, particularly in the Southern United States, struggle with the cultural and media depictions of feminism. This presentation focuses on the preliminary results of a photo-elicitation study of women leaders in education and their perceptions of feminism.

Session Description

Feminism has been a problematic term over the years, with perceived negative connotations. Studies have investigated feminist identity, identifying differences in geographic locations, education levels, stage of life and political party affiliations. In the context of the current study, literature suggests that some women, particularly in the Southern United States, struggle with the cultural and media depictions of feminism. This interactive session will include current literature, share the preliminary findings of the presenters' ongoing study of female leaders' perceptions of feminism, and provide discussion points for participants' self-reflections. The presenters will share strategies for using photo-elicitation interviews to guide critical reflection, as well as incorporating ideas for starting these discussions in adult education classrooms.
