Session Abstract

Do your students have life experiences that can help them transition to college? Clark College faculty collaborated to develop a competency-based math course to provide a pathway to college. Participants will learn how a competency-based math course was developed and create real-life math activities to support transitioning to college programs.

Session Description

John Dewey (1938) believed education should be based upon actual life experiences. Adult learners return to school with numerous life experiences. It is important to acknowledge these experiences and provide academic preparation to support adult learners in transitioning to college programs of study to ultimately earn a degree or certificate. Clark College developed a competency-based math course to provide adult learners with an option to transition to college while honoring life experiences. In this presentation, we will examine the competency-based math course (Basic Math) and real-life scenario assignments that support adult learners in transitioning to college programs. Participants will learn how this competency-based math course was developed in collaboration with other departments and participate in small/large group conversations to develop real-life math activities that support adult learners in transitioning to programs of study and entering new career opportunities. In addition, participants will be provided with several assignments that can be integrated into their courses.
