Session Abstract

This dialogue centers on generating ideas and understandings of how humility could address learning resistance in professional development settings. Expect a discourse of the types of humility, a synthesis of an ongoing integrative literature review, benefits and challenges, opportunities for application, and directions for future research.

Session Description

The United States is facing social justice reform, balancing a multi-generational workforce, and operating in rapidly evolving digital spaces. To be successful in this challenging environment means providing professional development training and continuing education through a new lens. Humility offers a radical shift in approach antithetical to many of the root causes of our societal issues. This session explores theories of humility and their application to overcoming learning resistance, increasing motivation, and promoting learner engagement at a time when employees need to respond immediately to the shifting demands around them.
Successful professional development, workplace trainings, and continuing education programming require more than being a content expert. Being able to apply theories of cultural humility, intellectual humility, relational humility, or qualities of humility to these learning environments provides adult educators and trainers with more skills to impact learners at a time when transformative learning is imperative to the workforce and society.
