Session Abstract

A mixed-methods study investigates student perceptions of online learning and interactions during COVID-19 at one public university. A student survey will analyze the impact of the pandemic on student engagement and technology with a focus on gender inequities, as well as identify suggestions and strategies to move the needle forward.

Session Description

Social distancing changed our world for students and educators in a way we never expected. Campus closings, no student activities, and the move to a full-online curriculum for everyone. Education had to react quickly during this unprecedented situation to find a balance between distance and education. The pandemic was a difficult transition that created a need to evaluate our transactional distance and inequities that were brought to the surface as we now try to manage a continuously changing environment and learn how to adapt to our new normal.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transactional distance has been experienced at increasing levels between the students and their professors from their previously traditional classroom settings. Transactional distance is the gap of understanding and communication between the teachers and learners caused by geographical distance. This theoretical framework can provide structure and understanding of online learning best practices.
A mixed-methods study will investigate student perceptions of online learning and interactions during the COVID-19 outbreak at one public university. A student survey will be used to identify the impact of the pandemic on student engagement and technology with a focus on gender inequities, as well as help suggest strategies to move the needle forward.
