Session Abstract

Algorithms dictate more of adult learners’ everyday life as processes shift into digital spaces. These algorithms, created by humans, have inherent biases and often use historic data sources that reflect injustices. This session seeks to understand their impacts and the role algorithmic education and adult learning play to improve equity.

Session Description

This session seeks to understand the influence of algorithms that shape our lives through a metaliterate and feminist lens. Dr. S. Noble's Algorithms of Oppression challenges search engines' neutral nature and algorithms within a black feminist lens. This presentation seeks to explore then how that impacts adult learning through metaliteracy. We explore literature and examples that shed light on the factors that have brought algorithmic dominance, how they are problematic for social justice causes, and their implications for everyday life. In order to better serve the field and empower social justice movements in this digital world, this session discovers ways to incorporate algorithmic education into adult digital literacy curriculums. By enabling students and society to understand algorithms better, this session hopes to raise awareness to bring algorithmic justice by enabling our digital spaces to be safer and socially just.
