Session Abstract

This session is designed to explore assessment of experiential learning that is translated into college credit via PLA. The session will explore various policy and practice at a four-year university designed to acknowledge college level and credit worthy prior learning from outside the confines of the college walls.

Session Description

As a part of a spate of National Degree Completion initiative, Prior Learning Assessment has become a viable effort to advance pace and rate of graduation for working learners. Considering the fact that there are 36 million adults with some college and no degree, PLA has the power to entice and engage adult learners to return to finish a program they started last year or long ago.
The University of Louisville’s Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership and Learning Program is designed for working adults, and is offered online and/or in class. Prior learning assessment is used to give credit for life learning in a specialty area that has not previously been awarded credit. Students can earn up to 48 semester hours of credit from college level and credit worthy experiential learning that happened outside the confines of university classrooms. Credit is not awarded for work experience, but for the learning that occurred as the result of work or life experiences that are comparable to college-level courses. This session will explore effective and efficient practices to translate experiential learning into college credit through a relevant, rigorous, and research based approach.
