Session Abstract

This presentation uniquely examines the trajectory of Black males through the educational pipeline from preschool through college. We will bridge the gap between theory and practice to explore frameworks and models that will improve their educational outcomes.

Session Description

In educational, as well as societal contexts, a number of stubbornly persistent themes tend to frame the conversations related to African American male cohorts. This critical issue is demonstrated by statistics that only 10% of Black males in the United States are proficient in 8th grade reading, only 52% graduate from high school within four years, and only 35% graduate from college. This presentation uniquely examines the trajectory of Black males through the educational pipeline from preschool through college presented in the book Building on Resilience: Models and Frameworks of Black Male Success Across the P-20 Pipeline. We will bridge the gap between theory and practice to explore frameworks and models that will improve their educational outcomes. The research in this volume will inform institutions how both P-12 and Postsecondary contexts can improve the achievement and success of Black males. The multifaceted approach of this text provides a focus on the range of students from academically challenged to the academically gifted as well as on the community, parents, and teachers offering research, theoretical, and practical insights. Each chapter provides a different framework/model that can be operationalized in community and school contexts.
