Session Abstract

This session will explore profound moments as a concept. We propose expanding the scholarly literature on profundity using profound learning as our theoretical framework. Through self-reflection and discovery, participants will be able to identify profound moments from their past and learn to recognize and cultivate profound moments in their future.

Session Description

The year 2020 presented a number of unprecedented challenges across the globe. In the United States, daily lives were not only impacted by the viral pandemic, but also by a great deal of social and political unrest. These events have been profound for many people, altering the core of their being. Drawing upon the existing literature on profundity, meaning-making, and present moment awareness, this session will explore the concept of "profound moments." Profound moments can be described as experiences that root themselves in the very being of an individual and repeatedly provide value and benefit.

Differentiation and/or comparison will be made to other types of moments (self-transcendent, transformative, defining, significant, traumatic, etc.), and how deep meaning is gleaned from these experiences. Participants will develop an understanding of profound moments and have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences.
