Session Abstract

Arts-based and arts-informed research studies are rapidly increasing. Although these terms have been used interchangeably, there are important distinctions that can affect research methods and findings. Art creates an ideal speech situation where all voices have equal weight. Additionally, art represents social existence in a way that can challenge norms.

Session Description

Arts-based and arts-informed research studies are rapidly increasing as viable structures for educational and social science research platforms. Because of this rapid growth, the distinction between the two has been misunderstood. Although these terms have some similarities, they also have very important distinctions that can affect research methods and findings.
This session begins with a justification of the purposes of using art as a viable platform for deeper understandings of research topics. The intent of using art for this purpose is not to explore art topics specifically, but rather to use art as a safe space to explore challenging topics. Next, this presentation moves into descriptions of each of these terms including similarities and small, but distinguishable differences. Understanding these differences leads to the purposeful designs in methodologies, methods, and analyses that best serve specific topics and/or populations.
A plethora of examples will be provided for critical conversation so that a deeper understanding of arts-based and arts-informed research can develop. In essence, an arts-informed platform will be used as a way to definitively share arts-based and arts-informed research structures.
