Session Abstract
Students have a lot to learn, and a limited amount of time. This session will explore utilizing social media platforms to provide instruction targeting hidden curriculum skills to nontraditional undergraduates and adults returning to school using videos under two minutes. We will discuss best practices for design, production, and dissemination.
Session Description
Fall of 2020 brought new approaches to library instruction across the board at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries. This was especially true in our efforts to provide informal leaning opportunities aimed at helping students develop research skills that are rarely explicitly taught in the formal curriculum. Traditionally this programming was offered as synchronous webinars, however there were three main challenges with this format. The fixed time created issues for students who were interested, but it didn’t work in their schedules. When it did work, as informal learning it often got pushed aside because of pressing formal learning commitments, or the need for a break. Finally, by the fall of 2020 Zoom fatigue had gotten to even the most dedicated student. This presentation will explore how the UCF Libraries divided complex skills into discrete tasks which could be taught in videos that were two minutes or less. We will discuss best practices related to instructional design, video production and dissemination, as well as ways in which the videos can have further life beyond social media.
