Session Abstract
"Have you ever heard of residential boarding schools?" If you were to ask this question to any adult in the US, the majority of answers would be, "no". This session will discuss the history of this topic and how adult educators can bring light and understanding to a marginalized culture.
Session Description
Buried under centuries of oppression, Native Nations continue to fight to keep their culture and history alive. The history of Indian boarding schools has been vastly written out of the history books, but the trauma and devastation it left behind is still very relevant today. This is not a well-covered subject in our American learning system, therefore, most people don't know about this important aspect of our history. The more knowledge we have about Indian residential boarding schools the more we can embrace our differences, celebrate other cultures, and keep history from repeating itself. By educating other adult educators on the topic of residential boarding schools, and opening up a discussion on how we can use adult education to be an advocate for the marginalized, we can let education be the key to the empowerment of the indigenous people, and not the key to their oppression.
