Session Abstract

A review and application of learning theory as it relates to the field of sports medicine to empower athletes and maintain athlete engagement throughout the rehabilitation process. Particularly extensive cases that require more than 6 months. This pertains to the weekend warrior athlete, or the Division I and professional athlete.

Session Description

It is no secret in the realm of sports medicine and athletic related injuries that the rehabilitation process can be tedious, overbearing and at times downright boring. Countless websites and articles have been posted and written to address how to “Keep Rehab Fun,” and “How to Keep Your Athletes from Getting Bored.” Although these articles in and of themselves have useful information and offer a variety of innovative and unique techniques to incorporate creative exercises into the practitioner’s program, there is more that can be done. Incorporating creative exercises is a surface level solution to an age-old problem. What if we dig deeper? What if we address how the athlete learns, becomes engaged and remains engaged throughout the rehabilitative process? This presentation will take a multi-layer approach to discuss applied learning theory and how it relates to the athlete’s rehabilitative journey. The importance and relevance of this presentation is to bridge the gap between adult education and practitioners in the field of sports medicine. Additionally, to gain a better understanding of what influences engagement and disengagement during the rehabilitative process. And lastly, to better equip adult educators as they influence and teach future practitioners in the field of sports medicine.
