Session Abstract

In this interactive session the facilitators will engage participants in exploring the challenges of classroom discussions which can "get out of control". Communication and adult learning theories will be used as tools to understand how class discussions can get away from us and how to get them back on track.

Session Description

Because our learning environments are a reflection of society, we are seeing increased polarization of ideas in our classes and a resistance to listening to another's position. Students who should be engaging in thoughtful discussions which can stimulate their learning can fall into destructive conflict and escalating arguments. This can cause some students to take control of the conversation and leave others silenced. As communication teachers, we think looking at adult learning concepts through the lens of competent communication and communication apprehension will offer guidance on what we need to do for our students in class.
