Session Abstract
Did faculty with online teaching experience feel ready for the transition to online/distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic? We will share a research study that examined this question and we will engage in a discussion about the study findings and reflect on your own teaching experiences during the transition.
Session Description
We will present a quantitative survey research study that examined faculty with online teaching experience, and their perceptions regarding their levels of readiness during the transition to online/distance learning (O/DL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is important because it is unclear if faculty with online teaching experience felt ready during this transition. Instructional administrators and staff who support O/DL must determine the gaps in faculty's readiness to online/distance teaching and the affective and cultural factors that impact faculty with online teaching experience at a college/university (C/U). The goal of this study is to gain insights regarding faculty readiness to O/DL that might impact the practice for faculty developers, instructional designers, and institutional leaders who focus on online course design and teaching at a C/U. We will share our methodology and results including descriptive statistics from the scale items and correlations regarding faculty levels of readiness to O/DL between age, years of teaching, training experience, and lifestyle readiness. We will discuss the findings and innovations regarding how C/U support units may adjust their existing professional development plans to better support faculty. Lastly, we will engage in a reflection activity with the audience about their own experiences transitioning to O/DL.
