Leadership Development Disposition Engagement Reflection

Session Abstract

Leadership disposition development models have long existed in the business and corporate world, but are scarce in the human science workforces (K-12 education, law enforcement, social work, public service, etc.). This session introduces an innovative instrument that targets these sectors through assessment and reflective practice.

Session Description

Leadership competency models in business and industry have contributed significantly to improvements in both the internal culture and the external outcomes of corporations. The implementation of these models have been shown to increase employee retention and job satisfaction and to decrease burnout and turnover. The importance of these variables are evident in both the economic impacts and the performance impacts of worker attrition. Similar models are scarce in organizations that measure their success in terms of people instead of profits. These organizations are critical to the effectiveness of our society on the whole, yet there are few leadership development models dedicated specifically to them. There are significant gaps in leadership development models in K-12 education, law enforcement, social work, and other sectors. The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) defines "disposition" as "the habits of professional action and moral commitments that underlie an educator's performance." Our model is called a "disposition" model of leadership development to remain consistent with this vocabulary. This topic is particularly timely in the age of COVID where stress, burnout, and turnover are at an all time high in these fields.
