Session Abstract

As universities struggle with decreasing funding and increasing pressures to demonstrate "impact", rural communities can easily fall off the radar. This session will focus on issues and challenges encountered in designing and implementing university adult programming in rural communities. Specific examples will be presented from two different public universities.

Session Description

While the demographic balance in the US continues to shift toward more urban areas, a large segment of the population remains rural. The challenges adult learners face in rural communities are unique and significant. University programs that seek to reach these learners face challenges as university strategic plans and funding are often focused toward more urban/suburban population centers.
This session will focus on the challenges/needs of rural communities and rural adult learners. Examples will be given from two public universities with historic rural ties that are seeking to serve the unique needs of rural adult learners and have lasting impact on rural communities.
