Session Description
Nearly 80 percent of individuals convicted of a crime are granted parole or mandatory release to rejoin life outside of prison. In this session, Taylor’s (2014) four types of learning resistance are used for analysis of the various barriers to success for working with these learners to successfully reach their goals. After release, they are faced with many difficulties when trying to reintegrate into society. The path required for this reintegration is one fraught with intense and arduous individual learning. These adult learners face many barriers to being successful in their learning, some due to societal dynamics, which are outside of their control, and, like all learners, some of their own making. These barriers can inhibit the personal success of the learner but can be overcome. Since this is such a substantial number of the prison population, we need to address these learners so they may become productive members of society.
