Session Abstract

Teaching and coaching online adult learners in times of crisis has been an ongoing learning experience since 2020. The presenter will discuss effective teaching and coaching practices, while aiming to offer holistic support to online adult students during a wordlwide pandemic.

Session Description

In 2020 we had to rapidly learn how to accept and adapt to a new reality that since then has changed the world as we know it. Our adult students, in particular, had to quickly learn how to function being “full-time everything”: working from home, helping their children learn virtually, continuing with their own online studies, while also struggling with health and safety concerns. Some lost their loved ones, others lost their jobs.

The pandemic has transformed our roles as teachers and administrators and our priority has been our students’ wellbeing. Flexibility, promptness and genuine care are only a few terms that have guided our efforts to support our online adult learners during a worldwide pandemic.

The presenter will share her experience teaching and coaching online adult learners, while working with the online team to revisit our retention strategy and offer holistic support to our students. Furthermore, we will also focus on self-care for teachers and administrators, and discuss compassion fatigue. The goal of this presentation is to brainstorm effective support mechanisms for online adult learners while also reflecting on our own efforts to navigate the pandemic.
