Session Description
According to the Alzheimer's association, an estimated 6 million Americans now have Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) with that number increasing to 12.7 by 2050. The numbers are larger for women and people of color. Informal care giving plays an important role in maintaining independent living among people living with dementia and other chronic disease. Providing in-home care for as long as possible helps defer the exhaustive cost of long term care facilities.
With the predicted increase in longevity and the accompanying rise in age-related chronic illnesses, we can expect the demand for informal for more education and awareness of some of what can be expected as a caregiver of aging parents or other loved ones. This demand will be fueled further by profound changes in our healthcare system that are shifting many acute and chronic care services from institutional to home settings.
I share my journey as a caregiver of my parents who have both been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The journey has been filled with both comical and heart wrenching events. I share lessons I have learned along the way in hopes my insights will help others on their journey.
