F2c The Association Between Education and Food Handling Practices in Ethiopia

Short Description

Foodborne diseases are prevalent in developing countries and entail adverse economic consequences. Inappropriate and inadequate food handling practices are among the major causes of foodborne disease infections. Therefore, it is imperative to find an effective approach to improve people’s food handling practices. Theoretically and empirically, it has been shown that education is positively correlated with health. It follows that education also likely promotes adoption of practices to improve food safety, especially for people who face higher risks of infection. This study aims to estimate the association between education and food handling practices and to see whether there is a heterogeneity of educational effects on food handling practices among people facing different levels of risk by using a cross-sectional community survey dataset from Ethiopia. The results show that education has no significant effect on food handling practices for the general population. The heterogeneous effect of education is found in models that estimate educational effect on handwashing and washing of food contact surfaces before handling food. This has important policy implications.
