Reimagining the Academic Library for the Student of Tomorrow

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:00–14:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

In an increasingly digital world, the need for academic libraries to evolve has never been greater. This session will present key findings from our latest Librarian Futures report, focusing on the student perspective. Our research reveals significant gaps between students' expectations and the current offerings of academic libraries. For example, with Google as a primary research tool, libraries must bolster their online presence and engagement strategies.
This session aims to inspire academic libraries to innovate, adapt, and better cater to tomorrow's students. Attendees will gain insights into current challenges, receive recommendations for enhancing the student experience, and understand the evolving role of libraries in student success in the digital age.

Authority linking with identifiers: lessons learned on a major configuration change

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:40–15:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 00.17
Session Abstract

Authority control is central to clean and structured bibliographic metadata. Alma offers two strategies for authority linking: character strings and identifiers.
While in the process of changing its main authority vocabulary, the Swiss Renouvaud consortium also decided to modify this basic feature and adopt the ID linking strategy. The latter offers stronger links, more accurate update of bibliographic headings, and is by and large more promising when it comes to future developments towards linked open data.
Thanks to a fruitful collaboration with Ex Libris Premium Consulting Service, Renouvaud could address this challenge. The consortium also took advantage of this major change in configuration to implement a custom tool for authority control.
In this presentation, we will introduce the context of the project, describe the steps needed as well as the difficulties encountered. Finally, we will review the outcome and the advantages of the new configuration.

Building a digital bookplate website via Primo

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:40–15:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

This presentation will demonstrate how the University of Manitoba Libraries (UML) built a digital bookplate website via Primo. Traditionally, the library acknowledges donors by stamping materials purchased through a donation fund. This practice does not allow the library to easily demonstrate the significance of the donor's contribution.
After exploring the options, UML has decided to use Primo to showcase the donor's contribution. This presentation explains how materials purchased through any specific donation fund are identified in Alma and retrieved in Primo, how a Primo View is customized in order to build the digital bookplate website, and how Primo and LibGuides are integrated to make the landing page of the digital bookplate website.
With this practice, UML has a central web space to acknowledge all donors. Existing donors will easily see the collections they have contributed. Potential donors will easily understand how the contribution is acknowledged.

Working with Alma, Converis and Esploro in the life cycle of institutional research outputs

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:40–15:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

In academia, we are in a transformative phase of the publishing market, with high pressure to publish, increasing adoption of open access models, and the need to make research outputs more visible, both for assessment and career purposes. In this scenario, academic and research libraries are in many contexts at the forefront of supporting the creation, funding, and dissemination of data while creating opportunities for new roles and development for librarians.
The management of funding requests, open access dedicated funds, article processing charges, transformative agreements, and assessment initiatives require the design of new workflows for a better and more efficient integration between systems. By analysing the case of an academic library already working in these areas using Alma, Converis, and Esploro, the solutions already implemented, their limitations, and the improvements to be made are presented.

A bookmarklet based application to interface the Alma Metadata Editor with the IdRef authority Web application

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:20–15:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 00.17
Session Abstract

ULiège Library has been working with IdRef French authority file for name and subject access since 2021. In order to improve the cataloguing workflow, we searched for a way to integrate the Alma MDE with the IdRef search and cataloguing Web application. The developed bookmarklet based application allows cataloguers to launch a search in the IdRef Web application from a bibliographic Marc21 record opened for editing in the Alma MDE, and to import the retrieved authorized form, its identifier, and URI in the record. It makes it also possible for cataloguers to easily create new authority records in the IdRef Web application by pre-filling the input fields with the metadata from the record in Alma. Moreover, cataloguers can submit requests for authority record creation, modification, or deduplication. Finally, moving to IdRef led us to change the linking method from text matching to ID matching, employing a large number of batch alignment tasks.

Library Mobile App Management: Out of the Weeds

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:20–15:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 91.12
Session Abstract

In an effort to make the library’s online presence more intuitive and accessible and to enhance engagement with library users, UNC Charlotte implemented the Ex Libris Library Mobile App in 2023.
While implementation and configuration of the app requires some technical expertise - many aspects of app management require strategic prioritization, communication, and big-picture thinking. Join me as I discuss strategies for managing the first few months following Library Mobile App go-live, and navigating the transition from the weeds of configuration into big-picture planning.
Topics we’ll examine include configuration and strategic management of the app, such as: adjusting existing workflows to include the app, marketing, Quick Polls, Notifications, app design, Alma Letter configuration within the app, collaborative opportunities, best practices, favorite app features, and how the app speaks to our library’s strategic priorities.

When is a Government Document not a Government Document? Making sense of local resource types in Primo VE

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:20–15:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

For institutions that hold print Government Documents, the presence of the CDI Government Documents resource type can make for an unintuitive user experience: when a user selects that resource type in a blended search, they are excluding all of the local physical government documents. Come hear how the University of Toronto is surfacing our print government documents collections, why we are not using the MARC leader information to do so, and how solving this problem informed our approach to assigning local resource types.

[SESSION CANCELED] How do we solve a problem like loading user records in Alma?

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:20–15:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

The University of Nevada Las Vegas Libraries worked closely with the university campus IT department to get access to student (undergraduate and graduate) information from the student information system as well as access to faculty and staff information from the Workday system. The goal of this project was to provide more accurate user record information, which could then be formatted and synced with the Alma system. Previously, employee records were manually created and students were only identified as undergraduate students regardless of matriculation status. The new student user record load process went into effect after UNLV went live on Alma in December 2017 and the faculty and staff user record load process was finalized and implemented in March 2020. This presentation will cover how we output the data from the campus data sources, massage it into XML format using PowerShell scripts and then automatically load the user records into Alma.

Back to the Future: Changing LMS at Exeter University after 24 years

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:20–16:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 91.12
Session Abstract

Exeter University Library goes live with Alma, Primo VE, Rialto and Rapido in summer 2023. Join Eleanor and Andrew, LMS Trainer and LMS Administrator, to get a hot off the press insight into every Librarian's favourite massive change project! We will discuss how we have approached testing and developing new processes and workflows, as well as efforts to keep the Library Team involved and engaged throughout the project. The challenge and the opportunity lie in the gulf of functionality between Millennium and Encore, adopted in 1999, and the Ex Libris products we are transitioning to. The Team will be forced to think outside the box and completely renew their existing working practices, and we can't wait to let you know how it goes!

Building cultural sensitivity into Primo

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:20–16:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

The University of Queensland Library has a dedicated focus on our journey building and embedding relationships and participation for First Nations peoples. We seek out opportunities to leverage our Primo discovery layer in these efforts, including with a recent Cultural Sensitivity Statements project. This work included adding a Cultural advice indicator, banner, and facet on evaluated records, and display of an Advisory statement specific to the content. Identification of records extends across UQ systems of Alma, our Archival Management System AtoM, and our UQ eSpace Institutional Repository. Additional project elements include embedding cultural sensitivity messaging and engagement tools across our Library’s web presence, establishing targeted contact points for queries and input, and considering how we might measure the value added. This session will share details of this project, from record metadata in source systems through to discovery and engagement in our online environment.

Document Delivery @LIBISnet – where to start… and where to end?

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:20–16:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

Document delivery, whether it's physical or digital, seems to be booming business these days. Actually it always has been or should have been… but the solutions and possibilities which currently exist make it difficult to keep track of evolutions and make it difficult to be sure we're currently offering the best possible services to our end users. In this session we would like to provide an overview of the current Alma related document delivery solutions and zoom in on flows like FN (fulfilment network) and RapidILL which we implemented within the LIBISnet consortium. More specifically, we want to zoom in on the issues we currently experience, hoping we can start a dialogue with Ex Libris and the community to be able to implement the best possible document delivery solution for our end users today (AFN?) and in the near future (Rapido?)!

From Fee to Free: How our library moved from a paid to a free ILL service

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:20–16:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 00.17
Session Abstract

Since summer 2022, our interlibrary loan service has become free of charge for ULiège students, faculty, and staff members. A feasibility study, started in 2019, was completed 3 years later. In March 2020, because of COVID-19, ILL service had become temporarily free for the ULiège community. This was a great opportunity for a real two-year pilot phase. Thanks to the length of the pilot, solid statistics and usage data were obtained and the ILL operators had two years' experience in a free context. Additionally, changes in our workflows such as a new subscription to RapidILL, peer-to-peer resource sharing between Alma institutions and more automation in some tasks have reduced our ILL charges. As a result of the feasibility study, the two-year pilot, some changes in our workflows, and based on reactions of users and ILL staff, it was decided to keep a free ILL service for the ULiège community, with some safeguards to prevent abuses and avoid uncontrolled costs.

Linked Open Data for Beginners [1-hour session]

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:20–17:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 03.12
Session Abstract

Linked open data has gained increasing attention in the library community over the past few years. As a web-friendly type of structured data, linked data holds a huge potential to improve library services and transform library technical services, especially in the area of metadata creation, sharing, and re-use.
Ex Libris has raised the priority for developing linked data services and features as demonstrated in their recent presentations at the 2023 ELUNA meeting and the Alma Roadmap for 2023-2024. Based on the announcement by Ex Libris at the ELUNA meeting, libraries that are interested in using BIBFRAME as their cataloging format will be able to do so towards the end of 2024.
With all those exciting developments, are you curious about linked data and potential replacements for the current cataloging formats? And what impact might it have at your library? If you are, please come to this presentation where IGeLU/ELUNA Linked Open Data Community of Practice Working Group members will explain core concepts of linked data in simple terms, demonstrate what libraries can do with linked data, and discuss how libraries may implement linked data at their own institutions.
This could be a good foundational session for those of you who may be interested in attending other linked data sessions at this conference.

Building a Primo View for Collection Assessment

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 17:00–17:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

Libraries are looking for ways to understand more about the collections and identify the diversity gaps within their collections. There is much useful information that is not traditionally found in the MARC record. Wikidata has been used by libraries as a source of linking for information cards, but it has not been used a data source for diversity audits. Taking a sample population from Alma, bibliographic information can be uploaded into OpenRefine where names can be reconciled using Wikidata. Then Wikidata properties can be added to the spreadsheet. This information can travels back to MARCEdit and eventually be imported into Alma. The Wikidata properties are then mapped into local fields and enabled as facets. When we create an Alma scope activating these facets, librarians and staff can drill down on various characteristics including the sex/gender of author, the country of citizenship of the author and the sex/gender of the subject to get a more complete picture of the collection.

Using an Interactive Excel Workbook and Alma Analytics for Inventory

lunes, el 11 de septiembre de 2023 a las 17:00–17:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Inspired by a Developer Network inventory application, a VBA-based Excel workbook was developed for physical item inventory. This is a hands-on inventory tool for barcoded items to compare Alma shelfmark (call number) and complete title information with a physical item. Although not real-time data access, exported inventory data from an Alma Analytics report can be updated daily. VBA macros allow for customization (e.g.: language, specific error types, etc.) to suit the needs of an institution. The interface can record shelfmark (call number)/title discrepancies between a physical item and Alma record data, display color-coded item status problems to be corrected and provide basic alerts, such as an item that has already been inventoried. A USB flash drive is used in conjunction with a laptop to access easily materials on shelves and to avoid authentication and security issues.

Synchronizing a national union catalog with Alma CZ: Introducing automatic creation of electronic inventories within SUDOC

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 13:55–14:25 CEST add to calendar
Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

All French university and higher education establishments' libraries create records and locate themselves in a single catalog called the SUDOC. The records are then transmitted to local systems. This architecture forces libraries to report inventories twice: in their local systems and then in the SUDOC. This is why we wanted to simplify the circuit by automating the creation of inventories between Alma and the SUDOC. This project started in 2018 with the help of ABES (Bibliographic Agency of Higher Education). It has led to the implementation of a synchronization workflow between the national catalog and Alma for electronic documentation. The workflow is currently being deployed in about 15 French institutions. In our presentation, we will first introduce the French landscape of electronic documentation cataloging. Then we will present the workflow configuration, the main difficulties we encountered in this project and the main benefits brought to our cataloging circuit.

Alma functionalities as tools to facilitate changing cataloguing practices

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:35–15:05 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

The implementation of PrimoVE in the architecture of the LIBISnet consortium (2021-2022) posed quite a few challenges to our network where cataloguing had increasingly built on local practices that often deviated from the MARC21 standard. Cataloguers were used to 1-key solutions and heavy normalisation. Changing this to a practice where key values must be entered or checked in several places in the record would make cataloguing more complex, less efficient and – errare humanum est – less consistent.
Using Alma functionalities such as validation exceptions, normalization on save and record enhancements, a solution was developed allows the cataloguer to quickly make a basic choice by entering a local 'master key' but leaves execution in the record to the system. This same solution is also very useful to ensure consistency and efficiency in common workflows such as copy cataloguing and duplication records to register both physical and electronic versions of a document.

Geolocation of resources on an interactive library map

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:35–15:05 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Despite the many signs in our library, users sometimes have trouble finding the resources they're looking for. The step between the information found in the catalog (Primo) and the physical location of the item is often hard to take. To overcome this difficulty, we embarked on the development of an interactive map that geolocates the resources. The map has been easily integrated into Primo, so that the user can access it directly from the search results and is being pointed to the right shelves. But physical resources are only a small part of what the library has to offer. The next step of our project is to use the interactive map to point out online resources related to physical sections in the library.

Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

In 2018 the National Library of Poland started a new, multiyear programme OMNIS. In years 2022-2025 we are continuing the project within the National Reading Development Programme. Aim of the project is to build a nationwide library management platform basing on Alma and Primo. The project realized since 2018 covers implementation of Alma and Primo in 885 libraries (152 main libraries and 733 branches) by 2025.
In the presentation I am going to describe history of the project, along with challenges that we faced during realization of this complex venture. The presentation will also focus on the organizational aspect of the project – how we chose institutions participating, how they were grouped and how we taught them the system.

Simplifying the approach to identifying new editions for reading lists

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:35–15:05 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 03.12
Session Abstract

Maintaining Leganto reading lists and keeping up to date with new editions can be a complex endeavour. The process of purchasing new editions involves various workflows, and once the books arrive at the library, there are multiple avenues through which staff and instructors may become aware of their existence. Currently, there’s no streamlined method for alerting staff to a new edition.
Leganto users frequently request improved functionality to find new editions of titles on reading lists. Among the top NERS requests in the past two years have been enhancements to identifying new editions.
This presentation will showcase an analytics report developed by the IGeLU and ELUNA Leganto Product Working Group that provides the ability to effortlessly identify the most recent edition of a title on a reading list. It will also describe how the report has been used in several institutions' workflows including in conjunction with the ‘Suggest Replacement’ feature in Leganto. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn techniques for customising the report to suit their institution's specific needs.

Leaning in – improving processes at the University of Salford Library

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:30–16:00 CEST add to calendar
Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

At the University of Salford, the library systems team have been using lean process reviews for the last couple of years to support colleagues wanting to improve processes in Alma and Leganto.
Lean process reviews were developed for the manufacturing industry, but we have found it a useful framework to improve system related processes. It helps us understand requirements and resist the temptation to jump into making system changes before understanding the full picture.
A full Lean review can be very involved and resource intensive. To make it usable for our processes I have identified the key tools which help us identify issues and requirements without taking large amounts of time.
I’ll share how we’ve used lean to review processes in Leganto, purchase requests and laptop loans. I’ll also share tips on how to get started using Lean in your library.

swisscovery’s usability, what a discovery!

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:30–16:00 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

How about an adventure into the unknown? End-users are quite elusive and it’s not easy to pinpoint their thoughts. Dive into their relationship with Primo VE! This session will present findings from a usability study that was carried out on swisscovery, the Swiss search portal for higher education. The presented study is composed of different parts (a heuristic evaluation, a quantitative survey, usability tests and interviews). Every part provides unexpected findings and suggests, amongst many other results, that end-users choose diverse paths when searching and that they also have very diverse expectations. Together, we will also look at end-users’ ratings and feelings on key features, such as the search functionality, display of results, access to e-resources and physical materials. Come and discover the study's conclusions and our works to further enhance usability.

Perspectives on moving to VE: Assessing the challenges and opportunities [long session]

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:30–17:20 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

These sessions will provide an exploration of Primo VE from three institutions at different phases: already migrated, planned migration, and feasibility of migration. Discussions will include technical hurdles, decision-making processes, challenges, and benefits.

(1) *What's stopping us from migrating to Primo VE? An analysis from a Back Office holdout*, by Corinna Baksik
Harvard University has been on Primo Back Office since 2014. Is it possible to migrate to VE without losing important customizations? We have hundreds of custom normalization rules, 6 external data sources representing over 10 million records, a custom view for image discovery with hierarchical data, a custom view for curated database discovery, and numerous local features. How much of this can VE support? We have no firm plans to migrate as of this proposal submission, but are reviewing the feasibility of doing so. Discussion will include the primary technical hurdles to migration and possible workarounds. Solutions from the audience are encouraged!

(2) *To Primo VE or not to Primo VE and why haven't everyone moved yet and why would you?*, by Gaith Bader
The implementation of library systems witnessed a major shift with the rise of Library Services Platforms that are more complex. Primo VE as the latest discovery layer for Alma was Ex Libris' answer to try reversing the complexity trend. We'll examine decision-making processes surrounding the adoption or non-adoption of VE, exploring the factors that influenced the University of New South Wales Library choices. Despite the benefits offered by VE, such as its real-time discovery and simplified configuration, not all libraries made the switch. We'll explore the reasons behind this, shedding light on the barriers and challenges faced by UNSW Library in deciding to move to VE. Moreover, we'll explore what drives libraries to adopt VE, emphasising the advantages it offers such as better integration and reduced overheads. By examining both the barriers and benefits associated with VE, we'll provide insights for libraries thinking of migrating and offer tips for a more successful one.

(3) *Two Years After Implementation of Primo VE - How Things Stand Without BO*, by Andrea Zech
At the Freie Universität Berlin, we skipped the "Go VE" process and completely rebuilt our discovery layer. Starting from scratch has many advantages, but there are also some limitations that only became clear during implementation. More than two years after its launch, this will be a stocktaking of how things have evolved and what challenges currently exist and will need to be addressed in the future.

Session Abstract

A multilayered collection management approach combining usage metrics with publication and citation data can provide valuable context for your collection decisions. However, it can be time consuming and resource intensive to wrangle the data for a citation analysis. The new integration between InCites and Alma makes it easy to incorporate citation data into your collection development analyses. Quickly add dimension to your reporting with insight into how faculty interact with publications in your collection based on published papers, citations, and other indicators. Attend the session to learn how pre-configured reports in InCites can enrich your collection development.

Exploring Linked Open Data capabilities at the European Parliament Library

martes, el 12 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:50–17:20 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 00.17
Session Abstract

The European Parliament Library is part of the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS).
Unfortunately, the library is not perceived as a core service, and increasing the visibility of its resources is a critical challenge.
We are using the EBSCO Linked Data services to explore the capabilities offered by linked data to address this problem. Our Alma catalogue is transformed into a graph of Bibframe resources. After this transformation, the service:
• Exposes resources from our catalogue in a publicly-available website (https://link.europarl.europa.eu/)
• Creates connections between Bibframe resources
• Can enrich resources with linked open data
• Can generate HTML widgets to expose subsets of our collection
We will present how we used this service to create visually appealing widgets to advertise our resources in our Libguides. We will also discuss the current limitations found in the service, and how we plan to overcome them.

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 09:00–09:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Connecting users to full-text articles used to be a straightforward process of creating an OpenURL query that linked users from A&I resources to publisher sites. Today, it's not so simple. Several factors now need to be considered in creating a full-text link and deciding which one is used, including which publisher and aggregator sources have the article, the formats available to the user (PDF or HTML), whether the article is Open Access, if the version of record and alternative versions are available, if an article has been retracted or carries an expression of concern, and if the article is from a predatory journal. This presentation describes how the LibKey linking technology uses article-level intelligence and AI-based source selection to navigate the new terrain of linking to provide the fastest, most reliable, and most informed link to full text, every time, wherever the user starts their research journey.

A large, yet agile family: Facilitating innovation within the Renouvaud library network

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 09:40–10:10 CEST add to calendar
Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

The Swiss "Renouvaud" library network groups 150 academic, heritage, public and school libraries managed by 700 professionals, offering services to some 200,000 users. In such a diverse environment, how can the ideas and contributions of librarians and end-users be taken into account transparently in the decision-making processes that shape the network services? The focus of this presentation is how the Renouvaud governance model enables agile operation in daily business. We will demonstrate how Renouvaud applies its core values in practice through its support of libraries and how the inputs and feedbacks of its members are key in the co-building of innovative projects. We will explore how the use of open-source tools developed in-house helps with the automation and efficiency of routine and time-consuming tasks in Alma, and how they provide flexibility in the end-user experience. In particular, we aim to illustrate how the development and sharing of innovative tools within and beyond the Renouvaud network helps to constantly adapt to a changing world and benefits the wider community.

All For One: Harnessing Library Teamwork for Leganto Success

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 09:40–10:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

When we first implemented Leganto at UWA we set up an ambitious 5-year plan with a dual focus on facilitating self-management of lists by Unit Coordinators and continually increasing take-up of the service to ensure maximum student engagement.
One of the key factors that has allowed us to achieve these goals is having active collaboration across all sections of the Library. We initially created a devolved system of responsibilities for different Library Teams and then continually reviewed and revised this framework over 5 years as we went through staffing restructures and the resetting of strategic priorities. This focus on Library-wide cooperation has played an instrumental role in the ongoing success of embedding Leganto as a vital central pillar in the student learning experience.
This presentation will outline the evolution of our management structure for Leganto at UWA; it will be of interest to other institutions looking for examples of best practice in this space.

LOD-enabled library systems for the future: A librarian's perspective

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 10:20–10:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Linked open data is not a new topic and there are already many projects and just as many presentations about what you can do with LOD. However, LOD has not yet really arrived in library software. This presentation will attempt to set requirements for library systems so that LOD can be implemented and used effectively and widely by the library community. More than that, the presenters will discuss the ways in which libraries can help system vendors to develop LOD-enabled systems for the future by drawing the experience they have gained in dealing with research information systems, repositories, and open access publications.

Purchase Request in Alma – a suggestion for service improvement

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 10:20–10:50 CEST add to calendar
Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

At the Library of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, we are testing the usage of purchase requests through Alma and Primo.
First, we concentrated on how to modify Alma's flow to fit our workflow, which separates the roles of the person who reviews and approves the purchase from the person who places the order. We discovered a workflow usage mode that simulates the necessary missing steps to do this.
During the service study, we also identified a few issues and criticisms with the current service. For instance, the workflow seems unfinished to the end user and the purchasing operator, resulting in the display of information that is frequently no longer useful. Furthermore, the unavailability in Analytics of data on rejected requests prevents analysis of this important aspect.
In this presentation, we give our ideas for enhancing the service provided by Alma in the various areas in which we have been engaged, also considering suggestions made by other institutions.

IT library services as a trusted partner in the design, development, and sustainable exploitation of research infrastructures

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 11:20–11:50 CEST add to calendar
Room Emma Vorlat (00.E20)
Session Abstract

As a digital service provider part of KU Leuven Libraries, LIBIS has been a driver of digital transformations, bringing new innovations on both infrastructure and processes in the library domain. With the intensification of data driven research and the growing importance of FAIR data sharing, our more traditionally focused value proposition for the automation of library services has evolved to include being a trusted partner in the development of research data infrastructures.
This presentation focuses on the potential role of libraries as a trusted development partner for digital strategies and technologies, and our approach to providing a valuable service offering of sustainable research services and expertise on trending topics as FAIR data sharing, cross-domain (meta)data interoperability and trustworthy digital repositories in the context of EOSC. This will be demonstrated through several implementation stories where we are at the forefront of taking Open Science to the next level.

Rialto, OpenRefine and Leganto: developing a bulk purchasing workflow

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 11:20–11:50 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

We wanted to maximise the potential of Rialto for our purchasing processes by utilising the bulk purchasing functionality. Part of the difficulty is that bulk purchasing in Rialto requires ISBNs. However, these were not always provided in the data. To address this, we turned to open source software, OpenRefine, and developed a workflow for title matching and bringing into our data the associated ISBNs via the Jisc Library Hub API. We have successfully trialled this with 200 purchase suggestions. We are now adapting the workflow to Leganto citations currently without repository, including implementing ranking profiles within Rialto to reduce manual checking and boost preferred formats and licence types.

CRIS or Crisis?: How Did We Build a CRIS CRM System to Support Inquiries from Researchers?

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 12:00–12:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 02.17
Session Abstract

Every institution recognizes that the academic publications of their researchers represent the epitome of success and achievement in the academic realm. CRIS, a Current Research Information System is a platform that manages and measures the research output and academic activity of researchers, such as Converis, Esploro, and Pure. During the implementation of CRIS at Bar-Ilan University, a need arose to develop a dedicated CRIS CRM system that aims to assist researchers in efficiently managing their profiles and publications with the support of a specialized team of CRIS librarians. In this presentation, we outline the development process of a low-code, no-code CRIS CRM system using Microsoft Forms, Lists, and Power Automate to effectively handle inquiries from researchers. Discover our journey to design a customized system that meets user requirements and overcomes challenges throughout UX research, development, and testing until the official launch.

LIBIS manages a library network -- LIBISnet -- that includes a university library, college libraries, documentation centers of Government institutions, and more. Every institution has its own Primo view. These views provide access to diverse content, from library catalogues, CDI, digitized heritage collections, research publications to archival materials. Two of these sources can be searched via "Third node" or Search Webhook.
This presentation will discuss, in a non-technical talk, why we chose to implement Search Webhook, how it was implemented, the possibilities and limits it offers for us, the difficulties we met, and the solutions or workarounds we implemented.

The integration experience at Southern Cross University

miércoles, el 13 de septiembre de 2023 a las 12:00–12:30 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 04.17
Session Abstract

Southern Cross University launched Esploro in July 2020, going live with the Researcher Profiles. The platform's success at an institutional level has depended on developing integrations that benefit the researcher and streamline workflows for the institution. Our focus has been on a concerted effort to automate dataflows and minimise manual data entry.
In this presentation, I will discuss our experience with configuring, testing and improving integrations, such as the Researcher feed, ORCID, Web of Science, Smart harvesting and Smart expansion, Datacite, OAI-PMH, Pivot RP, and feeding data to the Southern Cross website. I will also share our failures and lessons learnt from the Ex Libris community.
The functionality of Esploro continues to grow, and as early adopters, we are keen to be at the forefront of new developments wherever possible and particularly where we see a benefit for our institution. Our experience working with the Esploro development team will also be shared.

How can you enable self-loan for patrons with no security issue?

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 11:05–11:35 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Libraries are constantly evolving and adopting new technologies. Just as in stores, bus stations, and other public places, patrons expect to be able to check out books using self-service kiosks. However, one of the challenges of introducing self-service kiosks in libraries is security.

We have developed a comprehensive solution for self-service checkout that simplifies the process and provides maximum security using a simple RFID reader. Our solution is based on the Alma API, which allows us to integrate with existing library systems. This makes it easy for libraries to implement our solution without having to make major changes to their infrastructure.
We would like to share our solution with the Alma community so that other libraries can benefit from it.

LIBsense - Book Evaluation Decision Support AI System

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 11:40–12:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Traditionally, librarians evaluate their book collections by conducting a manual analysis of each book to determine whether it should be added to or removed from the library's collection. This process can be time-consuming, and it often leads to inconsistencies in the evaluation process. With LIBsense, librarians can streamline this process and make more accurate decisions about their book collections.
LIBsense uses machine learning algorithms to analyze various data points, such as usage statistics, citation analysis, and publication date, to determine whether a book should be added to or removed from a library's collection. The system provides librarians with a list of recommended actions for each book, which they can accept or reject based on their own expertise.

Off the hook, using webhooks for providing feedback on bibliographic data

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 13:15–13:45 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Data quality and collaborative data improvement is one of the areas with substantial potential for efficiency and quality in a library network environment. The paper showcases the use of Alma webhooks in building a real-time feedback platform for librarians working on catalogue data.
The Austrian Library Network previously performed data analysis and built reporting facilities on a central catalogue data dump. After completing the migration from Aleph to Alma, we focused on establishing a new infrastructure making best use of Alma's integrations to run tests on the bibliographic data. The presentation will explain the basic use-case, the benefit to the users, describe the required infrastructure, implementation strategy and deployment in a containerized environment. Architectural considerations which help keep the data checks extensible and maintainable will be highlighted. Furthermore, some insight in the ups and downs of using Alma webhooks can be expected.

Mapping Book Locations on Bookshelves through Search Results

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 14:25–14:40 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

Locating books on bookshelves can be particularly challenging, especially for users who are unfamiliar with the call number system and the organization methods employed by librarians. Although librarians strive to provide book location information through web results, the storage of exact bookshelf numbers for all books presents significant difficulties due to frequent updates and changes in location. To address this issue, we propose utilizing the capabilities of Google Tag Manager to dynamically inject an HTML element into the query results of Primo, a popular library discovery system. Each search result item is augmented with a web link that includes the corresponding call number. This link directs users to a purpose-built web application capable of processing the call number and retrieving the precise bookshelf number where the book associated with the call number is located. This integration streamlines the book location process, aiding users in finding books efficiently.

Adding Library Control of Business Logic to Alma User and Esploro Researcher Processing

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 15:40–16:10 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

During migration. 5 years ago, Drexel Libraries created an update process for Alma Users and Esploro Researchers together with campus IT. Since then, a need for small fixes surfaced. Coordinating updates with campus IT can take months and some fixes were pressing.
Using Alma's Integration XSL Converter feature, the Libraries took control of the process and business logic. Now incoming the FTP SIS integration profile XML, provided by IT, is transformed into improved XML, more closing fitting the Libraries' evolving needs.
This presentation will discuss how to use Integration XSL Converters and types of changes they can make. The Drexel Libraries have contributed a neutral XSL converter to the community, created at the start of our process. Its goal was to output exactly the same data received from IT -- no changes -- and it was the basis from which we started our transformation process.

Customizing Primo to develop a digital bookplate website

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:15–16:45 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

The University of Manitoba Libraries (UML) used Primo to build a digital bookplate website to showcase library books purchased through donations. A presentation about this practice for general library staff will be presented at the conference. This presentation is a technical version of that presentation, focusing on lessons learned in Primo customization during the website development.

[SESSION CANCELED] Alma Remote Storage Database Cleanup

jueves, el 14 de septiembre de 2023 a las 16:50–17:20 CEST add to calendar
Room AV 01.12
Session Abstract

The presentation will discuss how to keep the Dematic automated storage and retrieval system in sync with the Ex Libris Alma system. This session will show how to output the data from Alma and compare it to the remote storage database using a Python script to analyze the data from both systems. Four text files are output after the comparison is run: BadBarcode.txt, Alma_NotinLASR.txt, LASR_NotinAlma.txt, and StatusDiff.txt. Using these four files, problem items can be identified and then fixed so that the two systems match. When the two databases are out of sync, there are problems when users make requests so it's important to maintain order. While the Python script is unique for UNLV's Dematic system, this might be helpful to other libraries using remote storage systems.
